To attain food security and self-sufficiency, the provincial government under Governor Eduardo B. Gadiano’s headship is maximizing its agriculture’s potentials by adopting and promoting new agriculture technologies and practices; and strengthened its implementation of programs, projects, and activities in support of farmers and fisherfolks.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist in coordination with the Department of Agriculture performed a function in harmonizing, unified and effective implementation of agriculture and fishery development program in Occidental Mindoro in increasing agricultural productivity and income as a strategic measure in addressing rural poverty and in pursuing its vision and objective as a major food basket in MIMAROPA region.
The province is known to be a major producer of rice and corn in the MIMAROPA region. In the cropping year 2022, Occidental Mindoro registered an annual rice production area of 99,243.93 hectares with the volume of production amounting to 540,802.15 metric tons and 37,250 rice farmers. The Corn production program is mandated to formulate policies and implementing guidelines for the production, irrigation, post-harvest, marketing, extension and training, research, and development of the Philippines corn industry.
Aside from rice and corn production, the OPA also implements programs for cassava, high-value crops like garlic and onion, fisheries and aquaculture, organic agriculture, agri-business, and as well as institutional programs.
Governor Eduardo B. Gadiano through the office of the Provincial Agriculturist continuously implemented the Balik Sigla sa Pagsasaka at Pangingisda Program. This program aims to deliver basic agricultural and fishery services to the farmers, fisherfolks, and indigenous peoples (IPs) communities for the initial recovery of economic losses due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The COVID-19 is not only a global pandemic and public health crisis, but it has also severely affected the global economy.
This program was composed into six (6) categories: Gulayan sa Barangay, Multiple Cropping, Tilapia Culture, Fish Culture, Procurement of Surplus Agri Fishery Produce, and distribution of seaweeds planting materials.
Furthermore, Balik Sigla sa Paghahayupan Program was also implemented to lessen the economic impact on the local livestock and poultry industry brought about by the expanded community quarantine by assisting the stakeholders and Indigenous People with projects like Ayuda sa Pagbabakahan and Ayuda sa Pagmamanukan.
